Prevent Vision Loss: See Your Eye Doctor Every Year
As a top eye doctor in Port St. Lucie, Dr. Durante provides comprehensive eye exams to identify vision problems, diseases and other eye- and vision-related disorders and conditions in their earliest stages, helping patients receive the most appropriate care for their needs. Many eye diseases cause few or even no symptoms until vision loss has occurred. In fact, one of the most common eye diseases, glaucoma, is often referred to as the “silent thief of sight” because most people have no symptoms until they begin noticing irreversible changes in their vision. Other diseases like macular degeneration can cause sudden loss of vision and permanent partial blindness.
Seeing the eye doctor every year is important for identifying many of these issues even before they begin causing noticeable symptoms like blurry vision, eye pain or even permanent vision loss.
For patients with vision problems like astigmatism, farsightedness (myopia) or nearsightedness (myopia), seeing the eye doctor every year ensures prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses remain optimized for clear vision, and they also help identify vision issues that can cause blurry vision, dry eyes, excessive tearing and even chronic headaches. Annual eye exams are important for older people who may be more prone to age-related eye diseases like macular degeneration, and they’re also important for children, teens and young adults whose eyes may still be growing and developing. In fact, maintaining clear vision is essential both for performing well in school and for enjoying sports and other extracurricular activities.
What Happens During an Annual Eye Exam
Annual eye exams begin with a review of any symptoms you may be experiencing, followed by a series of simple tests and evaluations designed to measure how well your eyes see at different distances, how well they perceive depth, how well they work together as a pair and other issues that can affect the way you see. A special retinal camera is used to create scanning laser photos of the retina, the light-sensitive back portion of the eye where the optic nerve head is located.
Additional assessments are performed to look for subtle signs of diseases, and for people who need prescription lenses, a special computerized autorefractor device is used to obtain precise measurements of your vision so you can feel confident you’ll get the prescription that’s ideal for your needs. All evaluations performed during an eye exam are completely noninvasive and painless, and most exams are completed in under a half hour.
